Well Michael Phelps really did make swimming history today, winning a phenomenal 8 gold medals at the Beijing Olympics and bettering the feats of Mark SPitz in the 1972 Munich Games. In the last race of the day the Baltimore took the fly leg in the medley relay. With Piersol and Hansen having already goone before Phelps, he dived in behind the Japanese team. By the finish of his 100m leg, he had drawn the US just about in front. Lezak, who swam that nail biting last leg in the 4x100 Free relay, never looked like he was going to lose the lead, touching home in a new WR of 3:29.34.

Today was a day when Michael Phelps made more swimming history as he equalled Mark Spitzs' record of 7 Olympic golds at 1 Games and earned himself a cool $1 million bonus to take home. The 100m butterfly race which won him gold number 7, was won by the smallest of margins - 1 hundredth of a second. How he managed to come from behind and out touch Milorad Cavic(SRB) at the finish was unbelievable to a lot of people. Even Phelps himself said; "When I did take that extra half stroke I thought I'd lost the race. I'm really lost for words."
