Steph Rice - Post Beijing

What an Olympic Games! I still can’t believe what happened. The results I achieved were a huge shock for me.

My goal was definitely to win gold, but to win three was beyond what I had imagined. My time in Beijing was filled with such a mix of highs and lows – it was the most emotional meet I have ever been involved in.

After the 400 individual medley, I was really excited and pumped up for the 200 individual medley. I then got a bit sick and was down again. Then to come out and win a second gold put me on a massive high. This was followed up with the relay gold which was just amazing.

I was just so proud to stand on the dias with the Australian National Anthem playing – it was even more special to share that moment with three other girls after the relay.

After each of my events and even once the swimming was finished I did so much media. I couldn’t believe the blitz. I have never done so much media in my life and it was quite overwhelming – but a great opportunity to thank everyone for their support.

I got to meet some fantastic international stars at the Olympics like NBA star Kobe Bryant, and I saw Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the Dining Hall but didn’t venture up to say hello. Meeting some other Aussie athletes like the Men’s Basketball team and Alicia Molik was a highlight, as I love my tennis.

Once I got home to Australia after the game, I couldn’t wait to go on a relaxing holiday to Thailand. It was really great to get away with a few of my swimming friends and relax because it was a rare opportunity for us all to really chill-out. Unfortunately I got sick on the fourth day and spent a couple of days not feeling very well, but it was still nice to get away.

Unfortunately my holiday in Thailand meant that I missed a couple of the welcome home parades. This was a shame because I really do appreciate all the support I get from all over Australia and wanted to thank the Australian people. But I made sure I was back for the Brisbane parade. It was a great day and the crowds were amazing.

I’ve made the most of my time off and am now getting back in to training.

Cheers

Steph
