I'm not a pro at swimming like the rest of you guys so could anyone give me some guidance?!
I really want to be able to swim lengths of the pool without stopping too much or without completely quitting after 10mins!
Am I totally unfit or am I doing something wrong?
Please help me!

I agree with swim9867, it will take you some time to build up the endurance. i still can't swim for long periods of time with out getting tired. Don't focus on how many laps you've done, and how many you need to do. Focus on something else..it always seems to drag on when you think of your laps (but do keep track of how many you've done.) My other secret (works amazing for me) I got a MP3 player that's waterproof, I put my favorite songs on there and listen to it while I swim. That keeps me motivated and distracted. Good Luck!
If you're newer to the sport, you might not have buit up the endurance that the expirienced swimmers have worked on for years that allows them to go for hours. However, it's natural to get tired, and everyone does!
Try swimming in sets, not just straight swimming. This will make it less boring and give you some time to rest.
For example:
300 swim freestyle at a relaxed pace
4x25s kick with a kickboard
2x100s backstroke or breaststroke
4x50s build [get faster as the 50 goes on and end with a hard finish into the wall]
Also, as even swimmmers may find out after taking a period of time out of the pool, fitness level does play into it. Running is an excellent cross-trainer for swimming if you don't want to spend all your workout in a pool!
Good luck!
